It had been 24 days since Myka was born and she still had her nasty yucky remains of her umbilical cord. Starting on day 20 it was starting to really stink, horrible stink. It smelled like something had crawled in there and died. I started cleaning it out more often with alcohol. It started to get more goopy than it ever had. I finally consented to take her into her doctor. He said that the body sometimes doesn't recognize it has a foreign body and it doesn't fall off on it's own. There was starting to be a mild infection as well. He put silver nitrate around the umbilical stump to help dry it up and fall off. He told that should do and come back in 2 weeks if it hadn't fallen off. Really 2 more weeks??? That night when I went to put her pajama's on her, the dead cord was stuck to her onesie! Yes, we can now give you a bath stinky girl!
She wasn't very HAPPY to be woke for this.
This is after it fell off, it still looks gray and yucky. The gray is from the silver nitrate used.
